Clear Ice Now Possible at Home

Experts have revealed the secret to making crystal-clear ice at home. To find the best method, they tested different approaches side-by-side in a lab. The testing involved comparing how various types of water performed in standard ice cube trays and a directional freezing ice cube tray.

Testing Different Types of Water

The experts began by freezing spring water, distilled water, tap water, and boiled tap water in standard ice cube trays overnight. They found that all types of water produced clear edges and cloudy centers, but none yielded perfectly clear results.

The team then used a directional freezing ice cube tray, filling each column with a different type of water. After freezing the water overnight, they compared the results immediately after removing the ice from the mold, and at 5, 10, and 15 minutes later.

The results showed that spring water produced the clearest ice, while tap and boiled tap water were also fairly clear, aside from a few bubbles and cracks. Distilled water, however, failed to produce clear ice, with cracks running down the middle of the cube.

The Benefits of Clear Ice

The benefits of clear ice are mostly aesthetic, but some bartenders and whiskey enthusiasts claim it melts more slowly, keeping drinks stronger for longer. However, this could be due to the difference in surface area between different ice shapes.

Some experts also believe that cloudy ice can affect the taste of drinks due to the presence of impurities. However, in their testing, the experts found that the taste difference between clear and cloudy ice was negligible.

The experts also tested the taste of whiskey served with clear ice made using a directional freezing tray and a standard ice tray. The testers did not notice a discernible difference in quality, though they did report that the drinks with the directional freezing tray cubes tasted stronger.

Directional Freezing: The Key to Clear Ice

The easiest method of obtaining crystal-clear ice is through a process called directional freezing. This involves freezing water from top to bottom, allowing any sediment to settle at the bottom and leaving the top clear.

A directional freezing ice cube tray has excess space under the mold, allowing sediment to settle and making it possible to produce perfectly clear ice. The water freezes from the top down, much like a lake freezing over in cold weather.

The experts’ findings suggest that using a directional freezing tray can be a simple and effective way to produce clear ice at home. They recommend this method for those who want to improve their drinking experience.
