Amid ongoing challenges in the UK property market, including slower house price growth and tighter mortgage access, more homeowners are choosing to improve their existing properties rather than relocate. New data from structural glazing firm Fluid Glass reveals which cities are leading this trend.
Bristol Tops UK Home Renovation Rankings
Fluid Glass analyzed renovation-related search activity across 20 major UK urban centers, examining interest in DIY projects, tradesperson services, and general home improvement terms to identify the most active renovation markets.
Bristol ranked first, recording 5,660 renovation searches and 1,144.8 searches per 100,000 residents. The data suggests homeowners there are actively investing in upgrades, full-scale renovations, or hiring professionals. Homeowners in Bristol show 48 per cent greater focus on renovation compared to London residents, London, ranking ninth, registered 780.9 searches per 100,000 residents.
Manchester came in second with 6,490 total searches. Despite having more overall searches than Bristol, its larger population placed it just below the top spot.
Birmingham generated the highest total volume at 12,710 searches, but its population size moved it to third place with 1,073.8 searches per 100,000 residents.
Newcastle secured fourth position with 3,400 searches and a rate of 1,060.5 per 100,000 residents. Among the top five cities, Newcastle has the smallest population yet still shows strong renovation demand.
Rounding out the top five, Glasgow recorded 6,290 searches, translating to 967.2 searches per 100,000 residents. The city’s high demand suggests many residents are choosing to invest in their current homes rather than consider moving.
Adam Randall, Director at Fluid Glass, stated: “Over the past few years, the housing market has presented growing challenges for property owners, and for many people, the answer isn’t moving, it’s improving. Instead of incurring the expense and unpredictability of moving, homeowners are investing in the properties they already own.”
