Builder and founder of Galconstruction Pat Gallagher was delighted to discover a site for sale in Red Hill, one of the few remaining bushland lots in the area. The site’s unique characteristics, with morning sun rising at the front of the property and dropping into the rear yard later in the day, made it an ideal location for a new home.
Gallagher designed and built the house in collaboration with Memla Setting Architects as his personal home, shared with fiancée Norah. The vision was to capture the character of a ‘modern cabin’ nestled into the surrounding forest, with each room offering specific views of the stunning interiors and setting.
The design of the house was inspired by the bark of messmate trees retained on site, as well as local wineries such as Port Phillip Estate, Foxeys Hangout, and Montalto. Gallagher wanted to integrate multiple references to popular hospitality interiors, while also reinforcing the project’s connection to Red Hill.
The resulting house features a dark timber ceiling, horizontal timber cladding, and large windows, all of which reflect the style of the local wineries. The use of subtle green marble inside the house references the dappled light of eucalyptus leaves moving in the wind.
The house’s spotted gum exterior cladding has already begun greying, further integrating the house into its environment. The rear lawn area features newly planted garden beds of predominantly native shrubs, granite boulders, and a few exotic flowering species, all under a large existing messmate tree.
Pat notes that this design technique maximises the topography and views of the site. The split levels throughout the home provide functional and generous spaces that feel nestled in the site’s tree canopy.
As the house settles into its surroundings, it’s likely that the connection to the local environment will only grow stronger. The use of native materials and the emphasis on outdoor spaces will allow the owners to fully appreciate the beauty of the surrounding forest.
Gallagher couldn’t be prouder of what he and the team have achieved. The house showcases the power of thoughtful design and collaboration. By working closely with Memla Setting Architects, Gallagher was able to bring his vision to life and create a truly unique home.
